Apr 19, 2011 · The Vortecs will flow more and be more efficient, but the TBI is only good for ~520 cfm @ 3" IIRC. Then you need to either buy a TBI intake for Vortec heads, or an adapter plate (Holley makes one) to fit the stock TBI onto the Vortec intake. Then there's the EGR. You have to tap off the exhaust manifold/header for the EGR with Vortec heads.
For the TBI with Vortec 5.7, you need an intake, a bump in fuel pressure (from free to $20 for a spring kit), and the new computer $450ish. Most everythng else is a direct swap over from your existing TBI motor. The computer upgrade requires no extra wiring, and is a huge improvement on the stock computer.

keep the TBI, but swap in a 96-99 vortec 350 under it... the intake is available from GM, and you can get the TBI to support enough power to have some fun with a few easy changes.

I just picked up a complete 350 vortec engine out of a 99 (old body style) Escalade. It is the same 9.4:1 i believe. swap a cam into it, with upgraded springs and cut the valvr seat guide area down, and have a blast. The Vortec cover barely covers the TBI boss, we had a fun time getting ours to seal.
